Are You Feeling And Looking Disempowered and Weak After Cancer?

Look, I get it, I was too! I remember thinking that any surgery and treatment would miraculously ‘fix’ my cancer and get rid of my nagging back pain.

Yeah, I know denial!

Well, there I was, Jan 2024, after being cleared medically to go back to exercise, having to start again, from scratch. Surgery, medicine, more surgery due to a hernia, not being able to eat and then the pain had left me feeling stuck, frustrated, angry and worst of all, weak… I caught myself in the mirror and took a picture. I hated what I saw! I looked like a Funko Pop. I have a big head, losing muscle is not a good look!

There and then, I made a promise to myself, never again! I could barely walk, let alone run and play with my kids, whom I hated, so much so that I could feel the anger rising.

Check Out The Before And After Shots Below!

I went into the hospital at 90kg, although my time with cancer was short (7 months before I started training again), I am aware how blessed I am; some people don’t make it. If you are reading this, congrats, you’re blessed too, even if it doesn’t always feel like it.

After the whole ordeal, going back into the gym on the 2nd Jan 2024 (a date forever etched in my memory), i weighed 76kg, looked like a funko pop, was weak as fudge. I couldn’t pick up a 10kg dumbbell, I couldn’t even walk the 200m to my kids’ school to do the school run. As someone who had always been fairly fit and strong, this was debilitating; in fact, I felt helpless, powerless and was willing to surrender my life (yeah, I was that bleak).

I had also lost 14kg due to meds, surgery, a hernia, being unable to eat, the back, bowel and stomach pain, and then there is the “delightful” anxiety and depression that comes with the emotional recovery too (first image).

Well I set myself the goal of putting it back on within a year, not just the muscle, I wanted the strength, the athletic ability, the cardio fitness, the mobility and most of all I wanted to do this without pain while keeping cancer away by kicking it it the nuts (literally and figuratively).

Well, as of Jan 2025, I am 90kg of love (second image)… I am also sniggering like an idiot while writing this. I know, the second one is nakey, if you can’t tell by my language, I am a giant dork. So naked pics weren’t really in my vocabulary, baggy superhero or rock music t-shirts were, and they always came in 50 shades of black…

So when I made this promise, I didnt just want to rebuild back to who I was before, that guy had cancer and was an arsehole; bitter, angry, emotionally repressed, weak, sniveling, coward of a human being. – See, this opinion of mine, you can see why I believed I deserved the cancer and wanted to end it.

So the Rebuild had to be better, faster, fitter, stronger, Kinder, resilient, loving, humorous, Fun, Confident, healthy, wealthy, athletic and powerful. – Funnily enough, guess how I now identify? Not a coincidence, I started the journey of rebuilding, inside and out, not one or the other, both, always both…
